Shirley Hawkins Poet Rhyme

All Nonsense

Some people still say "How do you do?"
Do what, I always wonder
I don't know how to answer this
That's something I must ponder on the next time I meet
Someone in the street
Would it not be better to say Hello and How are you?
Instead of as I've said before, that nonsensical "How do you do?"
I've done nothing since I've risen out of bed
I know I must be breathing because I'm hoping I'm not dead
This is not possible and simply can't be true
Unless the case may be
That you are dead too
You are still standing, standing in front of me
Looking all superior as anyone can be
How do I answer this question
I've decided I won't
"How do you do" is nonsense, so my answer is I don't.
