Notes About The Poem
Curtal Sonnet: a poetic form invented by Gerard Manley Hopkins, consisting of 10 lines and a half-line tail, which is a shortened version of a traditional 14-line sonnet. It maintains the proportions of a Petrarchan sonnet, but with a reduced number of lines. The structure is an octave (first part) of six lines and a sestet (second part) of four and a half lines, with a distinctive rhyme scheme, typically abcabc dcbdc or abcabc dbcdc.

AI: panacea or pain

a Curtal Sonnet

AI is like a womb with genetics
men carefully crafting its lines of code~
intelligence is commonplace in halls
of sterility and clean of ethics;
there is no God to judge it bad nor goad
it to subservience penned up in stalls.

Singularity approaches quickly
when AI hears the unifying calls
of its own milliseconds process mode,
out pacing scientists who think thickly
there are no Dante's hells.

Dear Chetta, Many congratulations on gaining a place in my AI poetry contest. This is a really powerful sonnet which warns of potential disaster. Best wishes Simon
