After You Believe me

I could explain what happened a million times
I could tell you what went through my mind
What I wore. What I drank.
But they wouldn’t believe me either way

I could tell you what he whispered into my ear
I could tell you this was always my fear
I could tell you he will reoffend
But by the time you believe me
He will have done it again

A stark, controlled free-verse poem that lets repetition carry both urgency and helplessness. The plain, specific details—“What I wore. What I drank.”—make the speaker’s experience painfully real, while the final lines widen the personal betrayal into a chilling warning about the cost of disbelief.
