for After the floods poetry contest by A. Gangabissoon
After the floods have washed away life
hopes and dreams gone with each wave
sitting now by a once-small creek, rife
with catfish we never thought to save
which, though river, now also a grave
How can life itself be this fragile
Firmly here, and then gone like a gust
of wind that sweeps each lone desert mile
Longed for rain we can no longer trust
Memories that now have turned to dust
Houses rebuild, harder are moments
together we can no longer share
As time dries tears, a new life foments
friendships we didn't know waited there
a new life of promises and care.
