Africa
Africa
By Blossom Monyei
Africa’s like an ocean,
We teach ourselves to swim so we don’t drown.
The words of others
sharp like arrows,
ready to pierce our tender skin.
But we ignore,
blocking those arrows of discouragement.
We’ve been swimming for so long…
Look how far we’ve come.
The storm rages,
yet we swim forward.
We are children of the sun,
its fire burns deep in our bones.
Here, we don’t choose how to live,
life chooses for us.
Life here is harsh
so we grow harsh too.
Still,
we keep swimming.
