Afflack

Against a moonlit sky
alone upon the deck
Afflack waddles among the boats
searching for some food to peck.

He’s a fine specimen of a duck
exclusive to our marina
he lost his partner years ago
and pines for her for no good reason.

His lonesome quacks, his grunts and sighs
betray the sadness in his eyes.
I know he truly can remember
his own duck love, his mate forever.

So I make sure to come prepared
to give him food, he is not scared
we’ve formed a friendship, he and I
he's welcomed here, he will not fly...away.

Hi Laura, I can't believe I did not welcome your new poem. :( I'm moved by the imagery, a wonderful poem to pen about friendship. I chose this poem because I thought of the Afflack commercial. Thank you for sharing. LINDA

Hi Laura, this is very well written. I'm sorry it didn't place in my contest. Part of the contest was to write how you felt when you posted your poem. Otherwise it would have placed very high.

Thanks, Richard. I'm fine with not placing, I sometimes just get too caught up in serious poetry, and enjoy lighthearted poem as well as. They are good for the soul! :)

Ah--you are a kind soul. We know that suffering a "loss" is a tough thing. You managed to capture this with such grace and ease.

This is a nice poem Laura. And before anyone laughs remember this: Laura is quite correct in her assertion - ducks in particular form very, very strong bonds not only as mates but also as companions and friends...fact!! It would appear that we are not the only species that is capable of love and friendship. :)

Thanks, John! Animals and birds do form strong bonds, just like us humans! I wonder where Afflack is today...he would agree! :)

Laura, thank you so much for visiting and commenting on "A Personal Prayer" earlier. I'm glad you connected as Ido with this "Cute' poem on one hand but much deeper on another level. It speaks to the unseen and imperceptible connections that exist between humans and animals alike. There is indeed "spooky stuff" throughout God's creation and you captured a morsel of it. Cheers, Terry

Thank you, Terrell. I love to observe animals and often wonder what they are thinking!

Too Cute. I could see him waddling around. Poor Guy. He needed a friend. Maybe, like geese, ducks mate for life. A good example for people.

He really did hang around our dock for a good while, then all of a sudden, he disappeared. I hope "our" duck found another mate!
