You said you loved my company
Listing my humor as the reason why
I have not heard much of you lately
But those who laugh do not quickly die.
I was thinking about you today
When I told a friend a thing profound:
"Jokes are the salt of our reality" say
The more I laugh the more my pains abound.
I hide so much, and you are not here
To listen, seismic quakings from below
The subterranean ego of my fear.
Ancient depths from Eve's quest to know
Remnant shards of ancestral guilt
Against the spine of life becoming
From seed's spring to orchard wilt
And lost joys for golden fleece discerning.
Give me youth again and the clean swept dirt
That frames the yard, the long log full
With friends' and cousins' eyes on our flirt
O the shams our innocence could pull
Desire meaningless like all our stories then
It is not so now when love's lessons write
Belated meanings on the heart of men
Not so while I think of you tonight
What bright days were those when we glee
At subtle tellings of the truth, what joy
Embarked in woven dreams desires set free
The boy excited that the girl is coy
And all the lands pastoral, fecund with sweat
From our brows, was a bright memorial
To things old men should forget, O forget
The jokes were truth that fear made trivial.
