The classical period of Arab civilization produced the most extensive and highly developed bacchic tradition in world literature, In this book, the author traces the history of classical Arabic wine poetry from its origins in sixth century Arabia to its heyday in Baghdad at the turn of theninth century. The focus is on the greatest and perhaps most likeable of Arabic poets, Abu Nuwas. Although wine poetry is only one of the many genres for which he is known, it is the one that has ensured his fame, and the one on which this book concentrates. The wine songs of the poet are analysedand their connections with poetics, ethics, and religion are explored. The author also puts Abu Nuwas in perspective by comparing him with his most important predecessors and contemporaries and by discussing his interaction with other poetic genres such as amatory, invective, ascetic, or gnomicverse.

That was a quote, I didn't put quotation marks or attribute it, its rather obvious is not plagiarism, and any donkey can see that, however there are always those with more spare time than anyone should have, to feel the need to spread divisions and conflict, avoid them like the black plaque.

Abu Nuwas

He proclaimed to the caliphate
In the dark hours of the evening
Rejoice! These splendid virgins are a bleeding
Drink our youth, and let not harm come our way

Peace is the brotherhood
Wine and love shall hold sway
Let us rejoice at the gardens and fresh bled flowers
The vineyards and the imams holy ways

Abu, in his boastful poetic fashion
Told the Islamic court,
Let us dance until the stars begin to fade
This is the fashion the universe has made
Embrace the learning’s of our neighbors conquered

The gardens of Babylon
In our drunkenness
Let us de-flower
Rejoice rejoice

For all that we do
We wish no harm on others
To flourish is all that we shall demand
Live with honor as you kiss the maidens hand

Abu held the court as poet and jester
Wine and wisdom invaded his soul
At times prison lay in front, enemies do fester
Freed from his irons

Abu Nuwas wrote poems of love
That lasted forever

Isis is the weed
And not the flower

I am doing an MA in Arabic poetry, and am focusing at the moment on the poetry of al-Mutanabbi. My focus is not so much the content of on the poetry itself, but on meter, poetics (arud, tafa'il) and its deviations. Abu Nuwas is one of my personal favourites, I love his poetry, another one is Ibn Zaydun. Nice to find someone else here who likes it :)

Thank you Nette, I had a friend from Lebanon introduce me to not only Abu Nuwas but the history of that time, and stories about him. :)
