Absence From Malice

He watches the others,
their shields at the ready,
their weapons deployed
held by hands ever steady

They were schooled in the arts
of defense in their youth,
yet, his masters did not teach him
to wield these, in truth

He wishes protection
for his mind and his heart,
but he's no sword nor a shield
and so, must depart

With his absence of defence,
both for body and soul
he will always retreat
if he's to remain whole

Does this mean he's a coward?
In some way lesser than thou?
Or is he merely a man,
who's surviving somehow?
