A Woman's Life

Stay away from the bee hive
That makes mommy glad
For I'm only five
And dying would be bad

Forget the bike
I want to drive
That's the car I like
Speed makes me feel alive

To baseball
To dance
To the mall
To get new pants

Motherhood is over
Grams now I am
I wish time would go slower
Did he just call me mam?

Assisted living here I come
Growing old is not any fun
Just found out that my grandson is a bum
Sits on the beach and surfs in the sun.

A wonderfully brisk, rhyming life-cycle poem that moves from childhood’s fearless curiosity through adulthood and grandmotherhood to wry old-age reflection. The short quatrains and simple end-rhymes give it an appropriately playful, storybook momentum, while lines such as “Did he just call me mam?” and the surfing grandson add warm, comic realism.
