A Western Ballad
A Western Ballad
Twas down on the border one night
Where he met a cowgirl and her love made everything alright
Her hair was the softest finest gold
A beauty beyond any tale ever told
She took the outlaw that came to her in the dark
It might have been wrong but there was that spark
His smile touched her like the rising sun
Kept her warm until the day was done
The kisses were hot and sweet like honey on fire
Continuously filling them with burning desire
He didn't go looking for love, but searching for gold
To take from the paymaster was the story he told
He had taken a room at Sadie's there in town
And they were together when the sun went down
She was his now and wanted his name
But those famous words she wanted never came
The girls all said these men are the same
To them everything is just a stupid game
She listened to all their lies and sorry sad schemes
And they cost her the man of her dreams
Curiosity had given her no alarm
When it broke in and said I mean you no harm
You should have seen the look on Jake's face
When finding her with another at Mamasita's place
She tried every way to tell her Jake she was true
That he was the only man she ever knew
His laughter sprang loud with disbelief all over his face
You're just one of the girls here at Mamasita's in disgrace
As he walked away she foolishly called for gun play
Then she ran toward him, but he told her to stay
For death was the price you put upon me this day
And for all to hear there in those words you did just say
From her cantina quickly mamasita did go
As fast as she could on her best horse, to old Minolo
She spoke with viscous burning lies upon her lips
For she meant to bring back bad men with guns on their hips
The next morning she watched the cantina door
Hoping to catch a glimpse of her darling once more
Came the smell of Death's Angel and she knew something was wrong
As she trembled the smell grew ever so strong
Then she began to cry
Knowing that Death was near by
It was just then she saw them ride in
An ugly group of filthy dirty dangerous men
With their hands on their guns and hate on their face
They rode up to Mamasita's place
They were here after her Jake
Because of lies, for money, and hate's sake
She wanted to run warn him but it was already too late
Her darling Jake was there in the street meeting his fate
She almost died hearing that horrible sound
That eerie echo left from bullets as her Jake hit the ground
She cradled him in her arms and begged him to open his eyes
But it was too late for Death allows no later goodbyes
She pulled him to her breast, that's when I saw it to my surprise
The Texas Star pinned to his chest, a Ranger here in disguise
She couldn't stand it, grabbing his six guns and firing at will
Praying to be straight, straight enough to kill
Six men fell right to the ground
The others slapping leather as their horses spun around
Came a noise from other side of town, Rangers riding in fast
And in an instant it was all over and now in the past
There where not even any left to hang
They had put the final end to that border gang
The Captain of the Rangers walked her way
He listened closely to every word she had to say
Of her love for this man and the deed he had done
Tears filled the Captains eyes, "Thank you ma'am for this man was my son!"
Now all is darkness for her and nothing will ever again be right
For her darling Jake is now gone and with him went his beautiful light
Now her flowers surround him and the candle is flickering low
That's my story so here is where the end should go
