A Trunk In the Attic

At age ten, I found a trunk in the attic full of leather-bound books and tied up comics. Luckily they weren't dusty; I'm asthmatic, dad scored them cheap base on street economics but my recall’s somewhat melodramatic. But for years, leery of Russian atomics I would hide in the attic; my special place, and read a book, from Shakespeare to outer space.

I can relate so well to this creative piece Emile. I used to have Classic Illistrated Junior comic books as my best friends. They were inexpensive and had high morals in fairytale stories like Rapunzel and Beauty & The Beast. They were a great comfort to a young girl who loved to read books but could not afford them. I loved your entry Emile. Congratulations on your placement my friend! : ) xxoo

Wonderful story, Emile! I am still an avid collector of comics, leaning towards underground issues & graphic novels, reading The Watchmen right now! jimbo

Emile, this entry is so creative and unique! I recall the days when we feared attack and hid in special places. And it seems your love for the written word was nourished there. It was very difficult for me to judge this contest because contestants wrote so many incredibly beautiful poems. It's my hope that all of them will regard their entries as wonderful "stand-alone" poems. Congratulations on your win! Best wishes, Carolyn
