Notes About The Poem

Narsinh Mehta was a saint-poet of Gujarat state of India who was an exponent of Vaishnavi (Devotee or worshipper) Poetry. He was the pioneer poet of Gujarati Literature during the 15th century . He is known for introducing literary forms such as “Pada”, “Akhyan” and Prabhatiya. One of his prayer has been translated in all the languages of India and was a favorite of Mahatma Gandhi. My poem-prayer below is inspired by one of his song.

 

A True Devotee

*Hare Krishna, I am your devotee
I know and feel the pains of others
Keep me doing well to others
And let not ego or pride enter my mind.

Hare Krishna, as your devotee
Never speak ill of others
Disdain greed and avarice
Respect women as I respect my mother.

Hare Krishna, as your devotee
I never indulge in lies
Lust and anger not my forte
For the salvage of my family.

Lead me from despair to hope
Fear to trust, from hate to love
From false to truth, war to peace
Peace, Peace, Peace.
