A Thousand Mirrors Old
can i endure the rejection in the mirror,
much too true and sharp and clear.
i’d rather be a vampire with a toothless smile.
the light is much too bright, and people kiss
their own sins, alas
the mirror breaks, shatters
in so many places, shyly hiding beauty marks
so visible they’re scary.
windexing the flat screen will not preen
the tiny wounded bird,
as average goes unnoticed.
no mention of a mentor, more like
a tormentor. whose words are wise?
i’m not taught to look for those,
only shadows, grimly gliding in the dark.
unflappably glaring from the only side i see,
with impeccable white teeth bleeding,
sucking the life, out of each room.
the mirror doesn’t disturb their gloom.
i have no need to fear for they seek
to mar the cheerleader or **** star.
i watch from the reflection of my inner soul,
waiting for the moment they catch the light of day.
