A Theatre of War

Fought in a chaotic war.
Caught in a deep sea of mud.
Is this all, they ask me, to die for.
Duty says, the task was, for the good.
When the foe, attacked us, off the shore.
   Soldiers, left covered in blood.

   Braving, those shells overhead.
Saving strength, give us the call.
Each night we're, retrieving, all our dead.
Our friends leave, us grieving, when they fall.
True heroes, by tributes, that are read.
   Epitaths, praising them all.

Hello Laura, yes the poem is sober, but I enjoyed having to follow a rather complex structure to write it. Thankyou for those kind remarks, very much appreciated. Cheers. George.
