A Stranger, for a While

A Stranger, for a While

I want to vanish like smoke into cities that carry no name,
a face unwritten by anyone, a shadow without a beginning,
carrying a bag that holds nothing but the silence I've gathered from the world,
a stranger born from a name that has never yet been claimed.

To wake in rooms I never dreamed of,
with the window thrown open onto a city that never called my name,
on streets where my shadow leaves no trace, no sin,
and no one recognizes in me who I once was, forgotten.

I want a café that doesn't know me, a chair with no crest, no name attached,
to drink from a glass no one has ever poured words into,
to be only a body set down in the light of abandonment -
no one's son, no one's friend, no one's answer - only the burning quiet.

I want to escape the beautifully ordered prison of this life,
from clocks, calendars, voices that keep calling me back,
from the wheel that gives birth to me each day in the same old morning coat,
the same mask laid over the same face bent low among us.

What if nothing were decided before it was even lived?
What if I missed one train and, blind, caught another instead?
What if I took a road only because a sunset had led me astray,
and the day itself taught me who I have not yet spoken into being?

Maybe I'd find in myself the child who watched the sky without guilt,
who, on some ordinary evening, found an entire galaxy inside it -
and I'd come home not running away, but carried by some root still alive,
because you don't run from life - you only leave it, to find it again - a stranger - a light.
