A Strange Night

A strange night

At night it comes
A tick, a knock, a sound
From the parlor to the bed
A tick, a knock, a sound
At the window shade
To then raise the skin
and wash me from ankle to head
From there it neither moves nor goes back
What can it be
From where does it go
To only repeat again the next night

This is a wonderfully atmospheric and chilling poem, Troy. The repetition of "A tick, a knock, a sound" is incredibly effective at building suspense, mimicking the creeping dread of an unexplained noise in the dark. I also love how the unconstrained free verse structure flows right into the visceral imagery of the sensation washing "from ankle to head"—it makes the mysterious presence feel so immediate and physical. A beautifully crafted and lingering mystery!

Thank you! I was a bit inspired by Edgar Allan Poe there.
