Notes About The Poem

Theme: Separation in a relationship. The act of cradling evokes the possible absence of a child... Even a broken rainbow represents hope...! For me, the most important element in poetry is sonic harmony: "softly I steal inside" – the soft consonant 'L'; the last three lines – a heavy 'R' consonant in every word.

a strange encounter

she sits on the porch
filled with anticipation...
the scent of pears floods the house
she cannot even guess how softly
I steal inside…
through the half-drawn curtain
cradling a broken rainbow
in my arms

A beautifully hushed, enigmatic scene—the pear scent and “broken rainbow” create a dreamlike tenderness, while the quiet entrance holds such intimate suspense.

Dear Alison, I truly appreciate your interest in my poetry and your kind words... It is an honor coming from a native English speaker. I am a 72-year-old Slovak man, a childless widower with a severe physical disability affecting my mobility. My nephew, who has mild autism, selflessly cares for me; we are a source of mutual support. I prefer short poems, as a great deal of emotion can be conveyed even within a small space. The Japanese tanka form and free verse suit me well. I also write rhyming poems and sonnets, though these are difficult to translate into other languages. Poems are meant not only to be looked at but also read aloud; therefore, internal harmony – the balance of words and syllables – is crucial. In my poem A strange encounter, the theme is estrangement within a relationship. Nevertheless, even a fractured rainbow remains a symbol of hope... I wish you abundant creative energy. I enjoy your poems and will share my thoughts on them later. Marian
