A State of Fright
Time stands still when you're in denial,
regrets offset by a phony smile.
And within wants, where hopes are vested,
fledgling hearts are routinely tested.
Tears garnered from ghosts of yesterday,
oft extinguish the flames of today.
And as doubt confronts reality,
trust and truth can often disagree.
Hurting hearts are reluctant to dream,
faulting fantasies for what they seem.
And sad images occupy your mind
as chaotic thoughts get realigned.
Painful memories accumulate,
and dreams of love cannot compensate.
For nightmares ensure a restless night,
leaving your heart; in a state of fright.
