A Soldier's Prayer

A Soldier’s Prayer

I’m hearing the whispers in the night,
I know what I hear is just not right.
The whispers continue on and on,
Then all of a sudden they are gone.

The battle rages on the other hill,
I lie in my foxhole and feel a chill.
I feel the stillness all around,
Then I feel the rumble of the ground.

The distant noise is coming closer,
Tanks rumble like a dozier.
Overhead a tank passes near,
I toss a grenade at its main gear.

A direct hit that cripples this beast,
All the noise inside has ceased.
I look out above my gun,
My entire company is on the run.

They ran at fast pace toward their goal,
All they left behind was an empty hole.
The direct hit gave the company a chance,
We could now begin our advance.
.
I ask my Lord to guide me this day,
He has never led me astray.
I feel a pain shoot through my leg,
Then I hear an explosion, like a powder keg.

I awaken and look all about,
Then I know there was no doubt.
My prayers were answered, I’m not alone,
God has come and taken me home.
