Notes About The Poem

A Sioux Autumn (DHR)

Transition

Whispers of Summer are slowly fading
the geese are beginning to fly South
away from the low suns with more colorful sunsets
as gray skies and longer nights will begin
the flame of each fire grows higher
to give greater warmth from the cooler wind
that crosses the plains as seasonal transition has begun
where gusts of wind blow across a painted plain of gold
and the last shadows of buffalo stand on the horizon
before their journey into a valley of Winter's breath

                    Reflection

Autumn is the time of gathering
where the elders share knowledge
with the children around campfires
and dances are done for Mother Earth
to give power to our spirits before Winter's isolation
filled with snow covered landscapes and bitter cold
as survival is passed on from this gathering

                    Prepared

This season of change is when the wise man prepares
to have his spirit tested
when there is little food and life dies
as the days grow shorter, colder more bitter
and becomes a long timeless balance
between the strength of the spirit and Mother Earth
so, our footsteps can find the Spring
after the journey through Autumn and Winter
