A Single Rose
Just a single rose bloomed there
among the neglect and all the weeds
I took such pleasure in its color
for nothing else in this garden of thorny bush
could compare to its beauty
How I longed to reach forward and pluck it
to lay it upon my lost love's grave
but I dare not- for it was not mine to take
nothing thus far had cheered her lonely resting place
I oft had tried and failed
for it is a miserable site to behold of grey stone so cold
She too like the rose was a rare beauty among a sea of thorns
and just as that single rose she too was cruelly chose
I stoop to read her faded name and kneel in silent prayer
and just as I am about to leave I place the single rose there.
