A Single Heart
As sirens echo through the dim sterile halls
a man lies dormant, his life sustained by lines
nourishing him with tempering moments of existence.
With unwavering faith
he awaits the matching that will replace his weakened heart,
for he has given his all for this single miracle.
Late into this troubled night, an awakening will occur
as a young girl is rushed from an adjoining passage.
Before the man is ushered toward his new beginning
he unselfishly offers that cherished organ
so that life can flourish within a little angel,
for her being would cease without his saving grace.
Now, each year of her new life, a candle is lit.
Her birthdays belong with this stranger,
for they are forever joined by a single heart.
