A Simple Man
I - a simple man - loved a simple girl
What can be better than that, you may say
But, oh, this is a complicated world
That has delivered me to this place today
A stranger came to us not long ago
He was taken by my bride's lovely head
She returned his ardor and told me so -
I - the simple man - simply shot him dead
Guards will march me to gallows on the hill
And tell me again what I have done wrong
Before they hang me they will say,"God's will"
And no one will sing - not even one song
The end will be simple - I know it must
As I go about turning dust to dust
