A Simple Longing

I wish that I could put my arms around you

feel the warmth and softness of you

catch my breath on the fragrance of your hair

and feel you breathing against my neck

as I murmured to you

all of the ways I love you

and everything you've always meant to me.

I would gladly abandon that wish

if you could be always well again

as once upon a time you were.
