A Shadow Hiding From the Sun
There's good and bad days,
like a shadow hiding from the sun,
only to realize it can't exist without light,
among reminders to wear gloves
because he's leaking chemotherapy fluid
and the doctor never came back in half an hour,
while afternoons get warm enough
to make us complain about the heat,
forgetting death just enough to feel uncomfortable-
there's good and bad days,
like turning the ringer on your phone,
before bed, wondering if tonight will be darker.
