A Sad Day

*A true story. If you don’t like this, please ignore, because I will delete any rude comments. As the Christmas season approaches with the new fresh fallen snow, And there are thoughts of pretty scenes, nativity and wreathes we know, As well as Santa bringing happiness and joy to children all around, And the colorful lights that hang with such brightness to be found… There is news coming from the Durham New Hampshire town: That only brings heaviness, with a solemn, very sad, frown No more Christmas wreaths on the lampposts will be allowed this year No more Santa riding on the firetruck on his way, will be near No more countdown to the lighting of the town Christmas tree All because of a few complaints from offended people, you see! So like the Grinch stole Christmas, things are now stolen here But sadly, these people will not grow a heart like the Grinch, I fear Because Obama started a transformation of America, people came unglued Determined to transform our meaningful celebrations, they pursued! You wonder why we fight for freedom, and the values of our home I say to all the offended, we will never stop fighting, where we roam! Heidi Sands 11/14/19

I find it very difficult to believe people would be offended by such things, they can just choose to not go to them... Like Tom, i work with different faiths and none of them have a problem, i wonder which state you are from... also the media do make things a lot worse than they seem..

people should say what they want to, as long as it is not insulting.. merry christmas is not insulting...

I read up about it and it surprises me that this is down to a few people complaining, i think there is more behind it to be honest... I know many people from different faiths that have no issues with this.. in the UK it is the minorities who are discriminated against by the right wing... In regards to the happy holidays, i believe it was because it also incorporated Hanuka, however i do not live in the US..

Also, this was starting years ago, under Obama Administration. There was a problem with even us saying 'Merry Christmas'. It was supposed to be Happy Holidays. Mangers vandalized, etc. Also, I believe this Christmas in Durham it is supposed to be called the Frost Festival now, or something on those lines.

Hi Silent One. Yes, it is hard to believe, but true. This town is nearby a town I am staying at right now and it did in fact happen, just as I said. It has happened other places in the country, but this was the first time it has hit so close to home. Very sad. We have a battle on our hands over here to save the values of America. Thank you for commenting :)

A well-written poem, Heidi, although sad in its content. This nation has gone insane, and I hate to bring up politics, but if a dem president is elected in 2020, God help this nation. I spent 30 years in the Air Force defending among other things religious rights and the way things are going disturbs me so much! Glad you liked the Frustrated Cat poem. Best to you - Bob

Hi Bob. I really appreciate your comment on this. I am grateful. And thank you for your service! I can only begin to imagine how you must feel. I don't mind that you brought up politics at all. In fact, one problem in this nation right now, is people becoming silenced due to all that is happening. In addition, I have to agree with you, due to what I am witnessing. Best to you also, Bob!

Its a disgrace Heidi, when I was at work there were people of many faiths and NOT one was offended by our Christmas celebrations. This has gone too far. It seems respect for each others beliefs has been thrown out the window. Tom.

Exactly Tom. It has gone way too far. I am glad to hear this is not happening at your work. It is happening WAY too much here. You are so right about no respect for others beliefs. It is very sad. Thank you for commenting on this Tom. I hope you have a nice day :)

I'm not sure why, but this piece gave me chills all over. It is excellently crafted, Heidi, but the news is very disheartening. The complaints of a few should not outweigh the rights of the majority. Culture and traditions should not be abolished when they offer peace, hope, and joy to so many.

Hi HT. It felt like a big punch in the stomach to me and absolutely disheartening. I agree. It is not fair to be happening because of the complaints of a few. That is right, cultures and traditions that offer peace, hope and joy should never be abolished. I appreciate you leaving a comment on this! Thank you. I hope you have a nice day :)

The few seem to matter more than the many. Are we to lose all the traditions, the joy, the excitement and the wonder of our children to those who believe in nothing? Let them be of a Bah Humbug mentality and leave the spirit of the holidays within us alone. They do this, because they can. That's all. Good for you Heidi!

Yes, you have made great points Sandy! And we should not let them take our traditions, joy and excitement away. It is a tragic loss. Their Bah Humbug mentality will not get them very far in life, if you ask me. Thank you for your comment on this. I appreciate it very much. Good night :)

i'm with you on this one...the world fell apart several years ago and it is not the same place we grew up in, it's a scary place...first the 10 commandments from courthouses (alabama i think) then the rebel flag, and so many more, now Christmas... that is a joke, i make wreaths for my parents graves every year and would be so aggravated with this news i'd be hanging them all over my property and anywhere i could ...wow... makes me glad i don't live there... great penning, sad story! hugs

Thank you for being with me on this one Sandra. I agree with you. It sure has fallen apart and I remember exactly the examples you gave. That is so nice about the wreaths you make for your parents. I can sure see why you would feel that way. Good night Sandra :)

Yeah, it's sad, isn't t?! I'm surprised to hear that Durham, NH went this way though. I went to college in NH, and it was a very traditional state, back then, most everyone a church-goer. Times have changed, clearly. Thanks for pointing it out, Heidi. And here's to a Merry Christmas! :) gw

Hi Timothy. I completely understand. I feel like I am on another planet. I just know our country values and what I believe until my last breath. Thank you for the validation :)

We had 25 police officers tell us to take it all down or we were going to jail. None of us backed down and we got our time in the courthouse and with an overwhelming vote starting last year everything was brought back to town and our old Mayor resigned. So I agree with you 100%. you have to make a stand and dont back down. Good things happen but you have to stand up and dont give up. Thanks for sharing this

Hi Heidi. I`m Greg and I live in a small Nebraska town called Ord. 2 years ago they did the very same thing here. They took away the manger scene to start and then the wreaths that hung in the middle of town. There used to be Christmas Caroling years ago. Well 2 years ago I put together a neighborhood commitee and we put the manger scene back up we put the wreaths in the middle of town again and 67 of us went caroling.

Shout this as loud as you like and if some don't like it...tough. I'm with you Heidi, the downfall of America started several years ago. We all need to join together and fight this fight. There are a lot of things I don't like about society but I'm not out there whining about it. This is just pure ignorance from jealous people who are determined to destroy whatever happiness people have left. If I were up there I'd buy a bunch of cheap wreaths and scattered them all over that town.

Thank you so very much Chris. I appreciate your understanding 100% . You are absolutely right. We need to fight this fight! And you know what? I was wondering about exactly that if this happens in this town where I am at temporarily, because...(this other town is not far) and I would continue putting up wreaths and probably be in trouble! lol. Thanks for the laugh about the cheap wreaths scattered all around the town there, though. Secondly, just after I wrote this poem, I walked outside to a massive vehicle accident on the island of land where I stood this morning taking the photo of the moon/ A vehicle has flown up on the island, crashed into the tree (almost hit the gazebo) where the Christmas lighting is here. !! This is a wild day.

A sad day indeed. The PC brigade at it again. I fear there is something far more sinister behind all of this. Not allowing Christmas Wreaths on lampposts is merely a symptom of a much larger problem. People who love free speech and the other hard won American, Judeo/Christian values need to expose this kind of madness at every juncture. Well done.
