A Prayer To God
God have mercy on me
Even when I lie down and feel mean
For this life is gone dim
Be my light and shed your illuminating greatness on me.
Lord, I love you, very very much
I sometimes imagine you in your throne
In that mighty, wondrous church
And your eyes I see,
So so further away like a match
Never missing
Always active
Never giving up; always determined.
Your hope for us hatches each day
Afresh in each way and day
Thank you God for creating me.
Lord, even when those Nairobi streets
become heated in the heat of the day
And when people idle talk, idle sleep and
Idle walk, cursing life itself
Even when boys, like that boy near the Polo club
Ever smiling
Ever nagging
Ever begging
Drunk with drugs
While so young and innocent
Living a life so cruel, so painful, so dangerous
While so young and innocent;
God please, guard me well
That I may live to love and share with all
That using I as your faithful servant
This life’s ugly picture
May become the life’s natural goodness.
