A Place Beyond the Pines
There lies a place beyond the pines,
A future filled with golden times,
I, for the life of me,
Cannot look that far away,
There seems to be no road ahead to choose,
I've frozen & yet time hasn't,
Am I stuck in a forest,
That's of my own making,
What is this place of golden times they talk about?
How are they sure?
As life passes away, a fading memory,
A fading memory, it keeps on passing,
I sometimes imagine not being born,
I close my eyes & I try to look,
I was just a child, ignorant & happy,
Happy in the coat of not knowing & in the arms of a book,
I look back & often find myself wondering,
Can it ever get better,
Will it ever get better,
Can you look me in the eyes & promise me it does,
Offer me the comfort of your advice,
Can you look me in the eyes,
Hold me a little & whisper your lies?
Memories like crushed photographs,
Even the bad ones make me smile at times,
I wonder if there lies something in the making,
Am I just on the starting line?
When did things change & these responsibilities like mountains.
Tower me & ask for acceptance,
I never asked for any of this,
I say take these away from me,
Can you borrow from me things that somebody lent me?
This feels like a bad dream,
I open my eyes & I know it is not,
There are no pines here, it's winter now,
It's always winter here,
The lies of warmth that you've been told,
I feel sorry for you.
If apologies help, do let me know,
If not, we'll burn down these pines together,
I promise I shall light the fire,
A fire that never ends,
Swallowing everything in its path,
A fire that you & I,
Shall both stare in the face of & laugh,
Come, sit with me here,
I'll talk to you about the pines.
