A Picture

The picture broke my heart
Torn it and shred it apart
A toddler with bottle in hand
Not aware of cruel hearts of man.

A baby sitting on his daddy's knee
Not realizing he won't get to see
His daddy to get to hold him tight
Or tuck him in bed at night.

I hold my grandson with all my might
Hoping terror never causes him fright
Praying that we never have to hear
Of death, of someone dear.

The picture broke my heart
Torn it and shred it apart.
I hope that when he becomes a man
One day that he will understand.

Sad tale you tell here. Are you familiar with the poetry of Rumi? Peace & Love Matthew Anish

I don't know which picture you refer to, but I can close my eyes and almost imagine it.......and I can cry with you for what your poem is saying. I have felt this way many times... Beautifully spoken, yet so very sad. Thank you for sharing.
