A Paradise Island

Written 24 December 2023 Placed 5th in : No 1243 New Poem Only Poetry Contest Sponsored by Brian Strand A Paradise Island A piece of land dropped from heaven In the midst of the vast ocean, An offspring of a volcano, Or as some may wish just to spin: The Lord made this island primo And then paradise as its kin. It`s a land of sun, sand and sea, A charming little paradise For those in person wish to see, A peaceful retreat for the wise, A boon in the warm sea to lie And a gem for sea sports to try. It is a land where the sun shines Not with a hot, but a warm shine All round the year, round the seasons; Here quite shy is the summer sun To set behind the horizon And chime a wonderful day`s end. It is a land where the shoreline Is greeted by sandy beaches White as far can stretch the eye line, Where under palm trees one can feast, Where one can bask in the warm sun Or mark one`s print on sand for fun. It` s a land where the turquoise sea Bordered by a deep fringing reef Makes a peaceful inviting plea For thrilling swims beyond belief, For waterskiing, windsurfing, Snorkeling or scuba diving. It`s a land where one can just doze On the peaceful white sandy beach In the shade of filao trees Lulled by sweetness of music free From the perpetual ebbs and flows Of mild waves within easy reach. It`s a land where southerly breeze Tempers mid day heat without cease, Gives birth to to a short spell of rain That quenches the thirst of the plains At night and lulls one to refresh And rise up next day fully blessed. It`s a land where streams speed to rest At their predestined destiny At the mouth of the pristine sea And mountains stand erect as thumbs, As angels seated down and dumb Or as mothers with triple breasts. It is a land of adventure, A dreamy heavenly island Pitched amidst beauty of nature Named Maurits van Nassaueiland By the Dutch and christened by name Of Mauritius; it proudly bears The flag of pristine charm and fame That drive visitors without fear From the depth of their heart and veins Oft and anon, times and again To the land of sun, sand and sea And their paradise destiny.
