A Month of Days

A Month of Days
Kevin Davis 2025

A month ago, my life began,
A child held gently by a clan.
I learned to cry and be consoled,
To walk, to speak, to grow, to hold.

Twenty-nine days past, school arrived.
I learned what kept young minds alive—
To read and write, to listen still,
To keep to time and follow will.

Twenty-eight days past, high school came.
I learned desire and friendship’s flame.
I found the dreams I longed to chase,
And sensed my purpose taking place.

Twenty-seven days past, I worked.
Though college called, its promise lurked.
But duty rose; the draft drew near—
And into service went my fear.

Twenty-six days past, brothers stood
Beside me in the fire and mud.
We held the line through dark and dread,
Till home awaited up ahead.

Twenty-five days past, school returned.
I studied hard for what I’d earned.
With effort steady, vision clear,
I shaped the life I held most dear.

Twenty-four days past, love appeared—
A soulmate cherished, close and near.
We wed with joy, our futures tied,
And walked through life, each by the side.

Twenty-three days past, children came.
Our home grew soft with love’s bright flame.
We learned to guide with patient care,
And felt small hands in the morning air.

Twenty-two days past, work took flight.
Long days, small triumphs, hopes alight.
We built a life both strong and true—
A home sustained by all we knew.

Twenty-one days past, home was made.
With painted walls and garden laid.
A corner of the world our own,
Where seeds of future life were sown.

Twenty days past, our children grew.
Their questions soared, their courage too.
We taught them kindness, taught them grace,
And marveled at their growing pace.

Nineteen days past, they moved ahead—
New love, new work, new paths to tread.
We watched them rise with pride and care,
Still parents standing always there.

Eighteen days past, we found our time.
Slow mornings came, a gentler climb.
We traveled roads both near and far,
And learned how light our burdens are.

Seventeen days past, joy returned—
As grandchildren with wonder burned.
Their tiny hands brought youth our way,
And warmed our hearts in simple play.

Sixteen days past, work drifted down.
We stepped back from the driven crown.
With lighter loads and open skies,
We learned to see with calmer eyes.

Fifteen days past, retirement came.
We walked the shore and mountain frame.
We traveled paths once left unseen,
And lived the life that lay between.

Fourteen days past, home grew still.
Each day a quiet, gentle fill.
Time softened edges worn before,
And peace grew richer evermore.

Thirteen days past, we turned to thought—
Of things we gained and things we sought.
We recalled youth and choices made,
And dreams we chased and dreams that stayed.

Twelve days past, side by side we leaned.
Though bodies tired, our spirits gleaned
A deeper love, a settled grace—
A light that time could not erase.

Eleven days past, life moved ahead,
But we kept steady, not misled.
We welcomed each soft morning breeze,
Each blessing drifting in with ease.

Ten days past, gathered family came—
Their laughter bright, their voices flame.
We held those moments, pure and strong,
A chorus of our lifelong song.

Nine days past, quiet filled the air.
We read by windows, free of care.
We watched the drifting clouds above,
Content in silence born of love.

Eight days past, we sorted years—
Old notes, old rings, old smiles, old tears.
Each memory gleamed with stories bright,
A treasure trove of lived delight.

Seven days past, we walked our past—
The fears we knew, the hopes held fast.
We smiled at the courage in our climb,
At all, we carried through our time.

Six days past, and steps slowed their pace.
We wandered through life’s softened space.
Yet still our love burned steady, true—
A flame that time could not undo.

Five days past, our family near
Brought voices warm with love sincere.
We saw in them our echo rise—
A legacy before our eyes.

Four days past, all the world fell still.
We breathed in peace from windowsill.
Each moment held its tender sway—
A quiet gift at the end of the day.

Three days past, we whispered thanks
For mountain trails and riverbanks,
For trials and triumphs woven tight,
For love that held us through each night.

Two days past, we rested slow.
We watched the evening’s gentle glow.
Hand clasped in hand, as we had been
From life’s first dawn to twilight’s scene.

One day past, we felt release—
A soft surrender into peace.
No fear remained, no shadows weighed—
Just gratitude for days God made.

Today I stand with story clear.
Each moment lived remains held dear.
A doorway opens, calm and wide—
I step with peace into its stride.

Today repeats what life has shown—
An ending is a seed once sown.
And wherever now my spirit goes,
My love moves on through all it knows.
