A Mile In Her Shoes

A mile in her shoes
You look at her and wonder
and simply do not at all understand
You would think she would leave him
Before things really get out of hand.

She thinks we don’t notice
The days she shows up newly bruised
Some of us look down on her at times
Because she allows herself to be abused.

I cannot look down upon her
Because I have walked in her shoes
You cannot know the pain she has
Or her shame she has for being used

She has children she must think of
And bills that need to be paid
Food for the table to be purchased
There are so many reasons she’s stayed

Her dreams and life have shattered
And hope died so long ago
Love has a different meaning to her
Something most of us will never know

So do not harshly judge her
She is aware of your opinions and views
And you should never ever judge her
Unless you have walked a mile in her shoes

Yes you are so right. you sound like you have lived it too as I have. It has been many years but somehow you never forget but you can see the signs in other women who are still living it and it makes for a sadness in the soul. Thanks for your input Samantha. It is appreciated Connie

Hi Connie, Loved how you extracted this one away. Congratulations, this is a great win, for such a painful and realistic theme, when writing about, this topic. In which phantom's around Abused Women. Have a nice day.... ~LINDA

Thank you for entering the contest, Connie and congratulations on your placement. You really hit the theme on the head with this one Connie! Nice flow and good rhyme. Easy to read and understand. I love the line: "Love has a different meaning to her" - that is so true. And, I like the way you notice, "She is aware of your opinions and views". Nicely done. Joe

Connie; What a beautiful poem you have written. I just loved it. There are so many women that live like this all for different reasons. As you say - we should not judge. We have not walked a mile in their shoes. This is very good for the contest. Thanks for sharing... Lucilla

Connie, thanks for the comments on my work. This entry really struck home. You noticed that I haven't posted lately. Well, I have been in rehab for a hip replacement and haven't had a lot of inspiration. I will be posting again soon as I ironically, had some great ideas while in rehab. This poem reminded me of one thought I'm working on. "I may not have walked a mile in your shoes, but I've worn out a few of my own.".. I send kudos on your work.. Keep posting and I'll see ya later. Luv Ya,Jake
