A Midnight Clearer
Listen to poem:
A Midnight Clearer
Occasions western Christian faith
all along Christmastime,
the eastern Orthodox faith hails,
it's Epiphany time.
The West marks it in December,
heeds their *Gregorian.
January is for the East,
they adhere the *Julian.
'Tis a journey that began with three.
dubbed (Wisemen), The Magi.
Three noble pilgrims from the East,
led by a starred night's sky.
A must-see forced by King Herod,
Rome's Judean leader.
"Go, return and tell me," said he
the e'er questioned pleader.
Balthazar's Arabian robes
cloaked an urn of myrrh scents.
Gaspar wore India's silks ... held
a vase of frankincense.
Melchior donned on Persian velvets,
bearing a chest of gold.
The nameless three, naught in The Word,
still, versions truth betold.
Brilliance over Bethlehem town
herders cleared fields, save young,
three reached a manger in the midst
soon, three icons unsung.
Heaven's touch beams innocence face,
Mary is truly blessed.
Joseph saw the miracle ... then
the three came all well-dressed.
Sets the scene, The Nativity
Christian's hearts, hold dear.
The Maji, homeward naught Herod's,
effects made, midnight clear.
*Christianity chose different calendrics, Western Christians chose Pope Gregory's & Eastern Christians chose Julius Caesar's.
