A mermaid man saved me from death

The tide pulled me down a greedy, cold hand dragging me from the shore where laughter used to live.

My lungs burned,
a fire I couldn't quench.
Darkness bloomed behind my eyes,
a soft surrender beckoning.

Then, a flash of emerald scales,
a movement like liquid moonlight,
and strong arms wrapped around me.

He was not man, not quite,
but something born of salt and dreams,
his eyes like polished shells,
his voice a murmur of the deep.

He brought me to the surface,
coughing, gasping,
into the air I thought I’d lost forever.
He held me until my breathing calmed,
his touch a promise of another dawn.

Then, with a flick of his tail,
a swirl of shimmering green,
he was gone,
leaving only the sound of waves and the taste of salvation on my lips.
