A Man For the Dark, Dark Days
Black-out curtains and empty streets
Air raid sirens and running feet.
Mickey Mouse masks
To save children from gas.
Air raid shelters underground,
Bombed buildings burned down.
Butter rationed, lemons scarce, no candy or sweet treat.
Register with your butcher, if you want meat.
Lawns replaced with a vegetable garden,
Volunteer service as air raid warden.
Streetlights off and headlights dimmed,
Traveling by car became quite grim.
Singalongs down in the tube,
Acrobats or a funny boob.
Anything to pass the time—
A joke, a song, a funny rhyme.
Makeshift beds to sleep the night,
Difficult time, an occasional fight.
Into these dark, dark days
Came a man, fears to allay.
Winston Churchill by name,
Known by many, such was his fame.
A soldier then statesman, a political man,
He stepped to the front with a bold, firm plan.
"Blood, toil, tears, and sweat."
It won’t be easy, that’s a sure bet.
"We shall fight on the beaches…in the fields…in the street,
we shall fight in the hills," we shall not be beat.
"The abyss of a new Dark Age" shadows us all,
But this is our "finest hour," and Britain shall not fall!
And fall they did not,
Though times were fraught.
Led by this man of purpose and cause,
Britain stood and gave the Third Reich pause.
And with allies Europe was freed,
Never forget this man and his deeds.
