Notes About The Poem
Step families are an interesting dynamic. Step fathers tend to not have any discipline role over the step children, regardless of their behavior or attitude.

A Lonely Step-Father
I wish she wanted to know how lonely I feel every day.
It’s not what she does or gives. It’s what her children say.
Even though they have everything any teen has ever sought,
They think they can demand more, and have that demand bought.
And when I say “Hang on, no. How about you earn that first.”
I cop a tirade of swearing hell. A crazed insulting outburst.
And then her kids play the “victim” card to someone who wasn’t there.
Someone who didn’t see their rage, who didn’t see them swear.
“Oh, he’s the bad one, he’s so nasty, never listening to what I say.
Who’s he think he is? He’s not my dad. He only ever gets in the way.”
And then the kid sleeps at my mate’s place. He says “Take tomorrow off”
Her mother agrees, “You look so sad, you don’t even need a cough.”
What I hear and do, expect and want? It doesn’t matter what I say.
I’m nothing, zip, I don’t count a bit, they’d rather me packed away.
To the kids I’m only good for food, taxi service, someone to make their mother smile.
To her, I wish she could see how lonely I am, taking notice once in a while.
