A Lonely Long Sleep
I sleep for more than tiredness
I sleep to forget
And forgetfulness balms my pains
And obscure regret.
I close my eyes and trust
The peace of only faith
Nor would I turn my back to death
Let treachery meet me face to face,
If it must rob me of my sleep.
I sleep to give my spirit rest
And one day I shall not wake again
Till he who knows my mootives best
Shall wake me
From my mortal flesh
And bless me with eternal rest
Beyond sin's enslaved domain.
Till then I shall sleep
A lonely long sleep of rest
