As a wee lad ... I was indeed blessed Two parents of unfailing kindness and noble spirit Thoughtful and gracious, sometimes to a fault Hence, the seeds of altruism were sown deep And tended with care and example Taking purchase at the core of my child's heart Other humanly aspects and habits Added unto that foundation of goodwill A loving mother but distant father Still, even in his casual neglect Benevolence and unselfishness were the origins of all he did It wasn't so much words for either of them But rather the ways they lived And the consideration and care they gave to others Whether loved-one, friend or stranger Oh, I am a very flawed creature I have made as many mistakes and poor decisions As most THREE other human beings But, if nothing else, I do my best daily To approach all interactions and conversations with others With the similar forbearance and generous disposition That I was raised with and taught And if I'm very lucky There's perhaps a FEW people Who have seen at least a flicker of my parents' sweet light In these weary, shadowy, grateful eyes ... Of mine.
