A Life

The hardest step is the first step,
They say. I think it’s true. No,
I know it’s true. I took it today.
Maybe now, I can have a life.

The hardest step is the first step,
They say. But unless I put my
Foot down, I’ll never know if
Maybe now, I can have a life.

A life without careless words and careful comfort.
A life without loving insults and calm threats.
A life without soft, choking blankets of security.
A life without fear and manipulation.

The hardest step is the first step,
They say. I took it today, holding
A black, ink-filled pen, signing
The first step of my tomorrow.

Maybe now, I can have a life.
