A Leg Up

There are some things I need to say to you,
before I ever let you near my heart
So listen carefully, my almost sweet,
I'm giving you the steps you need to take,
the words you need to walk your way around
my wounds. I need a little quiet space,
to travel inward, now and then. It won’t
be long, I promise you. Don’t watch the clock;
my healing can’t be measured in real time,
Our future’s up against a yesterday
that held me ever close, yet, let me soar
within a dream I thought I’d live forever.
