A Last Hello

The not knowing,
 it's what scares me most,
when seeing you again
was not even on my mind
and together we would laugh
and quickly pass away the time.

Then came that day
 when I should have known
with every fiber in my soul and bones
stitched a tight and tenacious a hold
not wanting you to leave
 but knowing you must go.

The last goodbye waves
 kissed before we know
as you headed home, alone
and in the tragedy that followed
came that unquenchable steal
 of our last hello.
