A Generation Answered

They were the best of us,
Young men in their prime.
Off to foreign lands they went
As loved ones looked on crying.

Smiling soldiers boarded trains
Excited at the thought
Of travel and adventure,
And battles to be fought.

But soon came the truth of it,
As they floundered in the mud.
Side by side, they fought and died
Our young men shed their blood.

Bullets, gas, bombs and shells
They bravely faced them all.
The cost though, the cost,
In thousands did they fall.

A century now has passed,
In history they reside.
But still today we honour them,
Those men who fought and died.

For they fought and died for us,
They sacrificed their all.
A generation answered,
When King and Country called.

Absolutely fantastic, a fast paced heartfelt poem and a wonderful tribute to fallen heroes. Does it not bring home though the futility of war, well written Gary, loved it, kind regards, Kevin
