A Game of Basketball
Just a spectator off on the sideline
watching with anticipation of a win, more or less in time,
the ball dribbles down along the maple wooden floor
it slaps the court and scurries on to score,
the hands' clap and voices shout loud
and both cheers and boos are heard, ashamed and proud;
the crowd stands up, some remain seated
as the cheerleaders sing out repeated -
some saying go, go, go
others yelling no, no, no;
but in this game, there is no tie
with winners and losers left to laugh or cry;
it's how you play the game they say
some cheat openly while others fairly play,
some display truths unfurled free throws
others elbow twists, bends, turn fast away then slow;
in every case, the coach and referee can see
just where the best shots taken could be.
We watch, we wait, not playing in the game
just observers holding back our exclaim
until the call is made and the winner is named
and losers hang their heads in shame.
