A funny, frightening dream
Last night I couldn’t leave a dream.
The doors of the house
of my making were locked
by a cheerful family
who didn’t mind
losing their home.
They were still chittering
in the basement
where a tv barricaded
the top of the stairs
and wobbled over
the water
on the gradually
flooding floor.
The washing machine
from a floor above
drained a shower
of water down
to our level.
It MIGHT be worth
fixing quickly.
Why was no one
rushing to find
a way out?
All the doors were
pleasantly locked,
and all
the windows shined,
pristine and strong.
The neighbors
came smiling,
and opened the door
from the outside.
I ran out frantically
and they were met
by the laughing family
who came up to greet them.
“What’s going on here?”
“Just a little water.
We will move upstairs
eventually.”
I ran full blast
away from the house
and past the stubborn
Evergreens
that were sinking
nonchalantly.
There were no birds
singing in their branches.
Other neighbors waved
and welcomed me
into another
half-submerged
home where
everyone
was dancing
on the roof.
In other houses,
some were unhurriedly
departing
for non-sinking ground.
The trees and rocks
had accepted
their slow submersion.
I had not.
Luckily, I didn't recognize
anyone who was part
of this town,
even though I was
webbed in the middle
of this nonsensical
play.
It wasn't my town.
The scene shot
to an aerial view
of this quiet, eroding
neighborhood,
sinking into space.
The sand
blanketed the
destruction.
Everything below me
was falling
speechlessly
back into a dark
and airless Earth.
It was a silent movie
ending. An ending
I wasn’t part of.
I woke up
to solid ground
and a standing
house.
