A Fundamental Concern

I am aware of the dangers of being judgmental When it comes to the so-called celebrity “faith leaders” However, calling them out, in my opinion, is elemental. I cannot understand how they can bathe themselves in luxury Talking about the lowly Jesus and his teachings At the same time, milking those living in abject poverty. While most of the world’s population are hungry and cold These perfect examples of hypocrisy and opulent greed With novel political connections become increasingly bold. Television evangelists have access to the homes of the masses Selling listeners worthless, blessed doodads and trinkets Under the laws for religious exemption, avoid paying taxes. Astonishing statistics revealing some of their astonishing worth Make me question whether some of these “preachers” Would consent to their own life-changing regenerative rebirth. Their finances come from those least able to contribute Whose hard-earned money winds up in their deep pockets But this, you can be certain, they will hasten to dispute. One of these evangelists is said to be worth over $40 million Travels in his own airplane, preaches a prosperity gospel His palatial home (he owns two!) is worth over $10.5 million. The richest “man of God” I will not name--might get sued, But, it is said he is worth over $300 million dollars, Flies in his three private jet planes, sometimes comes unglued. Beware, beware the nefarious dealings of these rich hypocrites Whose nebulous prophesies over time have never come true They will surely be held accountable for their media-age blitz. You've nailed it, Milt. Most of these TV huckster-hypesters are execrable at best. Well-spoken. :) gw

Yes, indeed. Shameful! Shameless, I should say! I know elderly people who give almost down to their last dollar to one of these shysters. And, you can't convince them that they are worthless POSs!

I am well ahead of you on this topic, Milton. I have dozens of poems vexing my anger on their hypocrisy, wealth and lies. Apparently they don't read their bible. Jesus has no scruples about judging or condemning the religious leaders of his day, and foretelling how they would be judged. For years I held back from posting my poems on this subject, fearing I might be censored. Maybe my time has arrived. / Maurice

Maurice, the time has arrived! If we poets do not speak out on these important (I think crucial) issues, then who will? I write opinion pieces, but I was released from one paper, after eight years, for my opinion on DJT! So, it's a fine line what you can say and what you can't. I think most people will agree with our perspectives.

I'm in agreement with you, Milton, and televangelists who bilk the poor are not doing God's work. True faith leaders don't require airplanes or mansions. Whatever happened to a "vow of poverty"? I think this is the first time I've read a poem addressing this issue. Well done, Milton! Hugs, Carolyn

Thanks, Carolyn, for reading my rant. IMHO, they are insufferable hypocrites who need to be called out for their crass lack of concern for the poverty-ridden and suffering people of the world. They disgust me!

Good on you Milton, terrific poem about these con artists, living like gods, I also have referenced them in some of my poems, people in denial only get offended by the truth, cheers David

Hi Milton, I agree; most of those preachers on tv are hypocrites. Their lifestyle contradicts the Bible big time, while their congregation lives in poverty. I applaud you for penning such a write. Have a great day and weekend:-) Alexis

Thanks, Alexis. I read an article yesterday about the top richest evangelical religious leaders. It really hit me, so this poem was the result. I appreciate your read and your comment. I'm sure others will be offended, but that's okay. This is just my opinion, and I have never been slow or shy about expressing it.
