A Friend So Dear

Lurking just beneath the surface
I bubble up when you most need me
You'd love to think I'm worthless
Then you're glad there's what to feed me

I assume the shape of motivation
When you need to be ambitious
Though I can make you shake all over
Thanks to me, you realize your wishes

Without me you'd never make it
   Through life's thorns and brambles
I'm there to push you when you need
To take big risks and gambles

Please welcome me when I appear
   Perhaps by now it's crystal-clear
      ~ My name is fear

Fear is a terrific motivator, for sure. I see it all the time.
