Notes About The Poem

Written 18th August,  2026  This Week's Poetry Challenge: No Letter E

A Dingo Howls

Outback sky a dark
      canvas of cold stars.
           Wind blows across dry dirt,
                   tossing grains of sand
                          against rocky crusts.

No clouds in sight.

A dingo calls out
       to a bright moon.
            Sitting upon a high cliff,
                    looking for a small,
                           quick hop
                                 of a kangaroo.

Harsh shrubs stand still.
       Night brings a sharp chill,
                calming a sun-burnt land.

At dawn, currawong
          will sing again.

But now, it is tranquil.
          Shadows wash
               all colour away.

Only a faint glow stays,
         a ghost of hours past.

Great imagery. It’s as if you’ve directed this poem rather than writing it as it could be a scene (opening scene or ending scene perhaps?) from a film. Nice one! A ripper and a beaut of a poem! Cheers - Gary

Chills overcame me! Here in the mundane confines of suburbia, your poem took me to the outback. Memories of the beloved sound, waking to the song of the Currawong. The air not tainted with the smell of Glen 20, but fresh and clear and the images you created, are so real I hear the noise of the dingo resonate, and feel the thump on the ground as the large roo hops by. Alison this takes pride of place on my favorite list that I might read it when ever I feel homesick for the true Aussie bush. & all with no letter E

'Howle' is now obsolete, but your poem contemporary. I've never been to Australia, your poem brings to life the majesty of the outback. A visit to your country is long overdue and still in my bucket list. Loved your poem.

I see that you're from Australia. Dingos aren't around here in the USA, but I'd probably want one as a pet. 😂 I like the imagery and the lack of the letter E.

Yes I am an Aussie. Dingoes do not have a good reputation as a pet. Though I think that is a reputation they dont deserve. ❤️
