A Different Person

I get asked how I am doing a lot
most of the time, I don't tell the truth
It's easier to say fine
I know that's not honest,
and I am an honest person,
but it makes it easier to get through the day

I am not who I was back in May
Truthfully, everyone changes according
to life's circumstances
but part of who I am was ripped away
when my son took his own life
and I have had to try to repair the gaping hole

I still love who I love, including my son
I still work every day to the best of my ability
I still write when the words are flowing
I do my best to function and live my life
but there are times that I crash and burn
and need to do a reset

I am hopeful that the new year will act
as a reset for me
the holidays were so very hard
someone told me that I would find joy
during the holidays, and I'm not sure I did
but I tried and I did enjoy seeing my family

I often wonder if I am grieving wrong,
because my grief is so all encompassing
and different from those around me
but I am trying my best. I am not the same
person I was, I am becoming someone who
lives with grief and survives
