A Cold December Night
Lying in bed with blankets piled, body still
furnace playing chicken never seems to kick on
outside you can hear the winter wind howling
and you don't want to face the cold night
lying quietly you feel the cold sneak in
through thermal curtains of an old bedroom window
frosty and nipping at your nose and ears
A empty mug of hot coco on the night stand
your tummy may be warm but your toes are cold
and you got fuzzy socks on
pull the blanket over your head and cradle in the fetal
position hiding beneath an igloo of blankets waiting the warmth
listen is the ice pelts against your window pane
and the stubborn cool of winter swirls around your bed
Reluctantly get up and head down to the furnace
with a flash light in hand and as soon as
you reach to turn the thermostat higher
A clunk and a cling rings out as the furnace turns on
it purrs the sound of emitting heat, the sound of angels singing
reach into the heavens and feel the heat of the breathing furnace
back to the bedroom crawl into bed as the coolness evaporates
into the soft kiss of warmth. A yawn and tired eyes closing
Suddenly you sit up, turn and feet on the ground
rushing to the bathroom, the coco kicked in.
